SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Finishing the weekend 2-1, The New Mexico state softball team defeated the Texas State Bobcats 3-2 in eight innings on Saturday afternoon, April 20, at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas. NM State now sits on a 32-15 record with a 13-2 record in Western athletic Conference play.
A solo home run by Malena Padilla, a single by sophomore Staci Rodriguez and four singles in the top of the eighth inning made the difference for the Aggies to win their 12th conference game this season.
Senior Alex Newman worked the first five innings in the circle with two strikeouts and just two walks. She allowed one earned run before freshman Makayla McAdams came in to finish the game with three complete innings and three strikeouts. She worked for her final strikeout to end the extra-inning battle for the Aggies.
“It was nice to come out and finish the weekend with a win,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “We really came out to win today, instead of playing like we had to defend, and that made the difference for us. We came out swinging and played well to finish the weekend.”
Each team singled in the first inning, but it was the second inning that gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead off the bat of Padilla. The sophomore blasted her fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to lead off the inning.
The Aggies sent the Bobcats away in order in the second and the Aggies did the same in their half of the third. Texas State had a big third inning with a pair of singles and an error at first to load the bases. A fielder’s choice plated the run, but NM State was able to get an out at third.
With the score tied 1-1, NM State got itself out of the inning with two line outs in the infield after a walk loaded the bases once more.
Padilla earned her second hit of the day with a single to the left side in the fourth. She finished the day 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.
TSU singles and had a sacrifice bunt in the home half of that inning. A walk loaded the bases for the Bobcats once more, but a groundout to first and Newman’s second strikeout of the day left the Bobcats stranded.
Senior Amber Olive led off the top of the fifth with a triple back to the center field wall. She was brought around off the bat of Rodriguez with a single through the left side with two outs and a full count, giving the Aggies a 2-1 advantage.
Texas State knotted the game at two apiece in the bottom half of the fifth with a single up the middle and two sacrifice bunts to move her around the bases and across the plate.
A Texas state error put pinch hitter Lacey Rother on base and a long-ball single by senior Teresa Conrad put Aggies on the corners. NM State was unable to move those runners after a strikeout and fly out ended the inning.
Sending the Bobcats away in order in the bottom of the sixth, NM State led off with a single by Olive. She was moved over to third off a sacrifice bunt by Covarrubia and a groundout by Rodriguez, but left sitting.
As the Aggies and the Bobcats headed into extra innings, Padilla, Conrad and Alyssa Ruiz each singled to load the bases and senior Tehani Kaaihue got a base hit up the right side to score Padilla, giving NM State a 3-2 lead.
NM State was able to hold out for the win as TSU had two singles in the bottom of the eighth, but McAdams was able to get the final strikeout of the day to end the game.
The Aggies wrap up the home portion of the 2013 schedule by welcoming the Seattle Redhawks on April 26-27, as part of Senior Weekend. The teams meet on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m., and then finish the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at 4 p.m. After the conclusion of the final game on Saturday evening, the Aggies will recognize and honor the 2013 senior class.
