Release:  04/09/2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (April 9) - The New Mexico State softball team travels to New Mexico in the second game of the 2012 Rio Grande Rivalry with a 4:30 p.m. start at the Lobo Softball Field Tuesday.

NM State (18-22) is coming off of a three-game series setback at Louisiana Tech. The Aggies are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak since losing the team's starting middle infielders and defeating then-No. 23 UNM and then-No. 14 Arizona in back-to-back games in mid-March. NM State defeated a ranked Lobos squad 8-6 in Las Cruces on March 14.

UNM (24-10) started the season strong with a nine-game win streak and eventually entered the national rankings in March. But the Lobos have since dropped out of the polls while posting a 7-4 record since losing in Las Cruces last month. UNM swept a Sunday doubleheader over Cal State Northridge by winning 5-1 in game one and 12-10 in game two.

Fans can listen to the game live on the internet or on a tape-delayed basis at 6 p.m. on KSNM 570 AM. Fans can also receive updates via Twitter at the Aggies' official account, @NMStateAggies. A live stats link is also available at NMStateSports.com.

New Mexico leads the all time series 78-58 after NM State's two-run victory in March. However, NM State has won six of the last seven contests between the Rio Grande rivals.

The foes split the season series a year ago with each winning team winning on the road. UNM defeated NM State 3-2 on April 4 in Las Cruces. The Aggies returned the favor with a 6-0 win in Albuquerque two weeks later on April 19. In 2010, NM State blanked the Lobos 10-0 in five innings at home and later swept the series with a 12-3 victory at UNM. The Aggies also swept the series in 2009.

Four active Aggies are hitting .316 or better coming into this week. They include a member of each class in Aggie junior Amber Olive (.377), senior Tiare Jennings (.337), freshman Malena Padilla (.333) and sophomore Valerie Swedberg (.316).

Two Aggies also hitting above .300 this year were lost two weeks ago to knee injuries. The pair includes sophomore Kristi Covarrubia (.357) and junior Tehani Kaaihue (.303).

Olive leads the team with 16 multi-hit games this season. Padilla now has the longest active hitting streak of six games. Tovio-Asato had an active streak of 21 games in which she had reached base via a walk or hit halted Saturday at LA Tech.

Sophomore Celisha Walker, freshman Karysta Donisthorpe and junior Alex Newman lead the Aggies in the circle this year. Walker leads the team with a 3.79 ERA and a 4-2 record with four starts. In 18 appearances, she has 20 K's in 40.2 innings pitched.

Donisthorpe carries a 3.89 ERA this season and has a 5-7 ledger and 12 starts. She has allowed 51 earned runs in 91.2 innings of work. Newman is 9-12 this season with a 4.45 ERA. In over 111.2 innings pitched she has surrendered 71 earned runs. Newman also leads the team with 22 starts in the circle in 2012.

Five Lobos with 90 at-bats boast batting averages .312 or better at the plate this season. Jessica Garcia leads the way at .421 with 14 home runs. Stefanie Carramusa has a team-high 15 home runs this year and is batting .387. Shenise Cox has hit 12 homers and carries a .347 average. Chelsea Anaya bats at a .324 clip and Jordan Sjostrand hits .394 at the dish.

In the circle for New Mexico, Kaela DeBroeck leads the Lobos with 16 starts and boasts an 11-4 record despite a 5.63 ERA. Carrie Sheehan is 8-3 in 13 starts with a 3.86 ERA. Kari Gutierrez carried a 3.74 ERA in 11 appearances and has a 5-3 record.
