LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State softball team defeated Seattle U 6-1 on Friday, March 28 at the NM State Softball Complex. The Aggies opened Western Athletic Conference play with 11 hits, improving the record to 19-15 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

“I thought it was a solid day for us. We hit the ball pretty well and our defense really stayed on behind our pitchers,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “Our pitching was solid, but I still think this is a series we have to work for. It’s going to be a battle.”

Junior centerfielder Staci Rodriguez went 2-for-3 on the game with a pair of singles. She also plated two of the Aggie runs. Sophomore Emma Adams had the big hit of the night with a solo home run over the centerfield fence to lead off the fifth.

Redshirt sophomore Karysta Donisthorpe and senior Celisha Walker teamed up in the circle to hold SU to six hits and just one run on the game. Donsthorpe started the game and worked three innings with two strikeouts and the win, while Walker came in to close the final three innings with four strikeouts.

The Aggies plated a run in each inning. Rodriguez singled her way on base in the first and was brought around off an error in the Seattle U outfield. The second inning saw a run brought around off a double by senior catcher Alyssa Ruiz.

NM State hit three singles in the third with the RBI coming off the bat of Adams. She hit her first season home run in the fifth, lifting NM State to the 6-1 lead and eventual win.

The Aggies allowed an SU base runner in all but the third inning, but kept the Redhawks from reaching third in all but two frames with the lone run coming off a two-base hit in the fourth.

The Aggies and Seattle U close out the WAC-opening series on Saturday, March 29. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m. with the series finale tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Game one of the day will have live video available on NMStateSports.com and ESPN3.com.
