LUBBOCK, TEXAS – In the second game of the day at the Jennine McHaney Memorial Classic, the New Mexico State softball team fell 8-4 to the Texas tech Red Raiders on Friday, March 7. NM State drops to 13-9 on the season, while TTU improves to 16-6.

Highlighted with five hits, The Aggies posted four runs on three RBI with sophomore Fiana Finau going 1-for-3 with a solo home run and junior Kelsey Dodd also going 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

Senior Celisha Walker started in the circle and took the loss for the Aggies. She pitched four complete inning and gave up the Red Raiders eight hits. She did manage to strikeout three with just two walks. Freshman Makayla McAdams came in to close the game without allowing a hit in her two innings of work.

The Red Raiders went up with a run in each of the first two innings. The first came off a single and an RBI double to left field. The second was off a pair of singles separated by a walk. TTU plated two more in the bottom half of the third off a two-run homerun to make it 4-0 before NM State would get a spark.

In the top of the fourth, Finau came to the plate with two outs for a solo shot over the left side to get the Aggies on the board. The homer is her ninth this season, which leads the team and the Western Athletic Conference.

While TTU plated one of their own in the home half of the fourth, NM State kept the bats strong with two runs off three hits in the top of the fifth. A single by senior Alyssa Ruiz set up for Dodd to double up the right line and score freshman Misty Hoohuli, who was in as a pinch runner.

Freshman Susie Chandler stepped in to run at second before sophomore Brennalyn Nakamura singled to left and freshman Haley Nakamura grounded out to second, but got the RBI as NM State made it a 5-3 game.

Walker pitched runner on first and second before McAdams stepped into the circle in relief for the second game of the day. McAdams pitched a sacrifice bunt and then walked two, pushing a Red Raider across the plate. Two more runs scored in the innings, one off a late throw home and the other off a bases-loaded walk.

The Aggies made a final attempt with a run in the sixth, but it was not enough to pull past Texas Tech. Junior Staci Rodriguez scored the final run for NM State as she walked on base and was moved around the bags to score on a wild pitch.

The Aggies now look to meet Northern Colorado at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 for day two of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
