Aggies Coast to 11-2 Win over IPFW

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 18)-The New Mexico State baseball team opened a four-game series with IPFW with an 11-2 win. The Aggies improved to 12-5 while the Mastodons fell to 2-7 on the season.


Senior right-handed pitcher Dan Reid improved to 4-0 in 2011 with his first complete game of the season. Reid didn’t allow an earned run and only gave up six hits. Offensively, senior outfielder Wes Starkes, senior shortstop Ryan Aguayo, first baseman Kurt Snowley and senior catcher Chuck Howard paced the Aggies with two hits each, while sophomore second baseman Parker Hipp posted a game-high three RBIs.


The Aggies jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior designed hitter Ryan Laing gave the Aggies the advantage with a two-run home run, which is a career first. Aguayo followed with a double to center and scored on a single from junior outfielder Bryan Karraker.


In the bottom of the third inning, Laing reached on an error to leadoff for the Aggies. Aguayo stepped to the plate and smacked his second double of the game. Karraker then recorded his second RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly that scored Laing from third.


The Aggies scored two runs in the bottom of fifth to extend the lead to 6-1. Junior outfielder Andrew Lyon started a rally for NM State with a two-out walk. He scored following a pair of singles from Snowley and Howard. Snowley scored after Starkes and junior third baseman Zach Voight drew walks.


NM State scored a run with another two-out rally in the sixth inning. Karraker began the surge with a walk and gave the Aggies a 7-1 lead, when he scored after Lyon and Snowley both hit right field singles.


In the bottom of the eighth, Hipp cleared the bases with a three-run double that increased the Aggie advantage to 11-2.


NM State continues the series with IPFW with a doubleheader, Saturday, March 19 at 3 p.m.
