LAS CRUCES, N.M.  - The New Mexico State baseball team picked up a series sweep to open the 2011 season, wrapping up the weekend with a 9-1 victory over Houston Baptist at Presley Askew Field, Sunday, Feb. 20.

The Aggies belted three home runs on the day with sophomore Parker Hipp, junior Bryan Karraker and junior Ryan Clark getting in on the action.  Each of those home runs came in the sixth inning, including Clark's, which was a pinch hit bomb.  Karraker's home run was a three-run blast and Hipp's was a solo shot over the right-field wall to start the inning.

NM State starter, left-hander Trey Ross had a great day on the mound, working 6 2/3 innings and allowing only one run.  He finisished with four strikeouts and walked only two of the 29 batters he faced.

"He throws strikes and keeps guys off balance," head coach Rocky Ward said.  "It was an outstanding outing and it looks like we might have found another guy who can give us the six or seven innings we are looking for."

The Huskies marked their only run in the top of the first, scoring on an RBI single to left field.  NM State tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when junior Wes Starkes, who finished the weekend with a .571 batting average, picked up and RBI single to score junior Andy Lyon who got on with an infield single.

The Aggies took the lead in the fifth inning when senior catcher Chuch Howard marked a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Lyon once again.  Lyon started the fifth inning with a lead-off triple and ended his day going 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Senior shortstop Ryan Aguayo started the sixth with a double to right-center field and eventually scored on a Karraker groundout to the shortstop.  After a scoreless seventh inning, NM State exploded in the eighth with six runs on six hits, including the three home runs.

NM State heads north to Albuquerque to take on in-state rival New Mexico, Tuesday, Feb. 22 with game time set for 3:05 p.m. (MT). Go to Twitter.com for score updates and NMStateSports.com for live stats.
