FRESNO, Calif. – The New Mexico State baseball team comes up with a big 10-1 win over Portland behind the arm of Heath Goin on day four of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif., Thursday, March 13.
Goin (Hood River, Ore.) didn’t give up any runs in seven innings of work and struck out five batters to get his first win in an Aggie uniform. The seven innings on the mound is the most on any NMSU pitcher this season. The Aggies allowed only one Portland run on the day, which came in when the bases were loaded and a Pilot batter was hit by a pitch.
Goin was backed up by a huge third inning where the NMSU offense put up seven runs on five hits and two Portland errors, which seemed to demoralize the Pilots. It started with a Marcus Quade (Littleton, Colo.) single to right field that scored freshman Trevor Bloom (Palmdale, Calif.), who got on with a single up the middle.
Junior first baseman Chris Auten (Agovra Hills, Calif.) got his team leading 17th RBI of the season in the third when he singled through the left side, which allowed senior Marcos Rosales (Gilbert, Ariz.), who got on with a walk. After junior Gavin Heinemann (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up an RBI off a walk, junior Bryan Marquez (Bonny Lake, Wash.) hit a two RBI single to left field.
The Aggies put two more runs up in the eighth off a Quade double to left field and another in the ninth when Bloom doubled to center field for an RBI. Those were the only doubles hit in the game.
Senior Joe Leghorn (Victoria, B.C.) went 1-of-4 on the day, but now leads the team in hitting with a .400 batting average early in the 2008 season.
The NMSU baseball team will play their fifth game of the week, Friday, March 14th at 2:00 p.m. (MDT) when they take on Gonzaga at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif. Live stats, a recap and box score of the game will be available for fans at www.nmstatesports.com.
