Aggie Baseball Drops Series Finale to Grand Canyon, 9-4

PHOENIX – The New Mexico State baseball team fell 9-4 in the series finale to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz., Sunday, April 27. The Aggies are now 17-22 on the year and 8-7 in Western Athletic Conference play while the Antelopes move to 23-18 overall and 12-6 in league play.

The Aggies posted four runs on six hits but tallied three errors while GCU marked nine runs on nine hits and committed just one error to hold on to the win. GCU put four runs on the board quickly, but were held scoreless over the next four innings as the Aggies tied the game in the third inning. The Lopes responded by scoring five times over the sixth and seventh innings while not allowing another NM State player to cross the plate for the remainder of the game.

NM State got on the board in the third inning with three consecutive hits, including two doubles. Junior Kyle Graf picked up his third RBI of the year after sophomore Joseph Koerper got on base with a lead-off double to left field. The Aggies pushed across three more runs before the frame was over to knot the score at four. Sophomore Derek Umphres picked up two RBI on a double to centerfield while senior Michael Paulson got an RBI on a groundout.

Sophomore right hand pitcher Zach Freeman was given the loss after he enter the game in relief working 4.1 inning while giving up three runs.  The Aggies used six pitchers on the afternoon compared to GCU using just three withs Zebastian Valenzuela picking up the win tossing 4.0 innings of relief.

The Aggies face Arizona State, Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. (MT) in Tempe, Ariz. with radio on in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570.
