PHOENIX – The New Mexico State baseball team dropped the series opener 6-3 to Grand Canyon, Friday, April 25 in Phoenix, Ariz. falling to 16-21 overall and 7-6 in Western Athletic Conference play. GCU moves to 22-17 overall and 11-5 in league play.
The Aggies started the game with a lead-off walk by outfielder Michael Medina and a single by shortstop Kent Black before getting on the board on a groundout by outfielder Michael Paulson. The NM State offense was held to just four more hits and put together a two-run ninth cutting the ‘Lopes lead in half.
NM State starter Christopher Bradley was credited with the loss and is now 3-5 on the year while GCU starter Andrew Naderer picked up the win after giving the Aggie bats trouble, striking out eight batters in 8.0 innings.
After the Aggies took a 1-0 lead to open the game, GCU bounced back in the bottom of the frame to tie it 1-1 on a sacrifice fly.
After trading zeroes over the next two innings, the ‘Lopes loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth and took advantage of the opportunity, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead. GCU made it a five-run game at 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh with another sacrifice fly.
The Aggies made things interesting in the top of the ninth despite having two outs on the board. Two batters reached via back-to-back errors, both of which came around to score on back-to-back singles but that would the last runs to cross the plate for a final of 6-3.
