BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The New Mexico State baseball team battled back to take a game from CSU Bakersfield defeating the Roadrunners, 5-4 at Hardt Field, Saturday, March 30. NM State moves to 15-14 overall and 2-4 in Western Athletic Conference play while CSUB is 19-9 on the year and 4-2 in the WAC.
The Aggies hammered two home runs in the game with senior Bobby Lecount setting the tone in the top of the sixth with a solo shot over the leftfield fence. After the Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the inning they took a 4-1 lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
After a lead-off walk by freshman Kent Blackstone in the top of the eighth and a single by junior Tanner Rust, senior shortstop Parker Hipp annihilated a ball over the left field fence to tie the game at four runs a piece.
Junior Michael Paulson led the ninth off with a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Michael Medina. Rust brought in the winning run on a single to right field with Paulson hustling in from second base.
Junior Christopher Bradley picked up the win as he finished off the Roadrunners working the final three innings of the game. He had three K’s on the afternoon, while senior Michael Ormseth got the start and did his job getting thru 4.1 innings without allowing a run to cross the plate.
Rust finished the day going 3-of-5 at the dish including the winning single and Lecount was 2-of-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI.
The Aggies now head home, taking on in-state rival New Mexico on Monday at 6:05 p.m. (MT)
