LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team opened up a four-game series with La Salle winning 18-8 in eight innings at Presley Askew Field, Friday, March 8.  The Aggies improve to 5-8 on the year with La Salle falling to 2-8.

The Aggie bats came to life posting 17 hits, which included a walk-off RBI double from junior transfer Jory Goldstrom that brought in junior Michael Medina.  That double was Golstrom's first hit of his Aggie career. Medina scored four times as he was walked, hit by a pitch and got on base on a throwing error by the Explorer catcher after striking out.

Junior Tanner Rust played consistently both defensively and offensively as he finished the day collecting three hits to go along with three runs and two RBI.  He also added a stolen base, which was his third of the year.

After falling behind 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third, senior designated hitter sparked the Aggie bats to life as he hit a grand-slam over the centerfield wall.  La Salle tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning, but junior leftfielder Quinnton Mack jumped on a pitch and got his first homer as an Aggie to give NM State a 6-5 lead.  The Aggies scored three more runs in the inning to take a 9-5 lead.

After senior starting pitcher Adam Mott, who is now 2-1 after striking out seven batters, held the Explorers scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Aggie offense exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the inning.  Senior Kyle Phillips started the inning with a stand-up triple and was brought in by freshman third baseman Derek Umphres on a single down the right field line.  Senior shortstop Parker Hipp got in on the offensive-fun hammering a two-run blast over the centerfield wall.

La Salle scored three more runs in the top of the sixth but a run by the Aggies in the seventh and four more in the eighth allowed NM State to come out victorious.

The Aggies take on La Salle in a doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m. (MT) at Presley Askew Field. There is no radio coverage, but live stats are available online at www.NMStateSports.com under the live events link.
