NM State Baseball Drops Close Game to UC Davis, 6-5

Davis, Calif. – The New Mexico State baseball team took the UC Davis Aggies all the way to the bottom of the ninth with two outs before giving up the winning run, falling 6-5, Sunday afternoon. The Aggies are now 8-12 on the season.

 

On the day, Derek Umphres led NM State, going 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Ryan Wagner was 1-for-4 with the bat, recording two RBI in the game. Michael Medina, Kent Blackstone, Kristoffer Koerper and Michael Paulson each scored a run for the Aggies. NM State was out hit on the day, 14-to-8.

Trey Gonzalez took the loss for NM State, throwing one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits. He is 0-1 on the season. Starter Kyle Kilgore pitched just two innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no strike outs. Riley Barr got the majority of the work on Sunday, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out one batter.

UC Davis started the game by taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning of play, but the Aggies quickly tied the game at one all in the top of the second. Paulson walked to put a runner on base for NM State, advancing to second on a groundout by Wagner. Goldstrom then smacked a double down the right field line, scoring Paulson from second, tying the game at 1-1.

UC Davis started the bottom half of the second with a double to right field and two batters later, after two straight ground outs allowed the runner to advance, UC Davis crossed the plate to take the lead back at 2-1.

Neither team would score in the third or fourth innings of play. NM State then put together a three run fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Medina was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Umphres then singled to center, advancing Medina to third, putting runners at the corners. Kristoffer Koerper was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with just one out. Two batters later, Paulson walked allowing Medina to score from third with two outs and the bases still loaded. Wagner then singled to right field, scoring Umphres and Kristoffer Koerper from second and third, giving the Aggies a 4-2 advantage.

UC Davis then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits, making it 4-4 after five full innings of play.

The Aggies took the lead right back after a double by Blackstone to right center, followed by a single to left by Umphres, scoring Blackstone from second. Making it a 5-4 lead for NM State after five and a half innings. The Aggie defense would shut UC Davis down in the bottom of the sixth, forcing two fly outs and a ground out to end the inning.

UC Davis tied the score at five all in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the inning, UC Davis doubled then singled to tie the game.  The score remain tied going into the bottom of the ninth. UC Davis singled to start the inning. The next batter would reach base on a fielder’s choice, as the UC Davis’ runner on first was out at second. A line out to the pitcher by UC Davis was for out number two but a throwing error by the Aggies on the play allowed the runner from first to advance to second. UC Davis then put runners at first and second after the next batter was hit by a pitch. Then UC-Davis’ Batty hit a single down the left field line to score the runner from second, winning the game 6-5 over the Aggies.

The Aggies will start WAC play this coming weekend, March 21-23, at Texas-Pan American.
