The Aggies scored a total of 28 runs on 24 hits in the two games. While, defensively, the Aggies allowed 14 runs in game one, they tightened up in the second game and allowed only two. Juniors Riley Barr and Robert Kraft came away with the wins in the two games on Saturday.

In game one, the Aggies took an early lead with a one-run first and five-run second, sparked by six hits and a Cougar error. A double by Goldstrom in the bottom of the first allowed Medina to score from first. Medina reached base after being hit by a pitch to start the inning. Five hits in the bottom of the second helped NM State grab a 6-0 lead after two innings.

SIU-Edwardsville pulled back into the game with three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth making the game 6-5, advantage Aggies. The Cougars took the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth, going up 10-6.

Kristoffer Koerper led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left center, his first of the season. The Aggies then put runners at first and second. Young stepped to the plate and singled to score one, pulling NM State within two at 10-2. Two batters later Derek Umphres stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and crushed a triple to the wall in right center, allowing two runs to score, tying the game at 10 all after five innings.

The Aggies added four in the bottom of the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh to make it 16-10. The Cougars scrapped together two run in the top of the eighth to make it a four-run game at 16-12. The Aggies couldn’t push any runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth and held a four-run lead entering the ninth inning.

NM State’s defense held off the Cougar attack in the top of the ninth, taking the first game of the double header, 16-12. The Aggies recorded 15 hits in the game, led by Koerper, who was 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored and a homerun. Wagner, Goldstrom, Carswell and Umphres each added two RBI apiece. Riley Barr improved to 2-0 on the season with one and a third inning pitched, allowing two runs and striking out two batters.

In game two, the Aggies got right to work as they scored three runs in the first inning. The inning was highlighted by a Koerper homerun that drove in two.

NM State continued their strong hitting effort as they drove in five runs in the second inning, including a double by Medina that drove in two runners. Four more runs crossed the plate in the fourth and the Aggies took advantage of an SIU-Edwardsville error to take a commanding 12-0 lead.

The Aggies had three hitters with multiple hits in the second game of the double-header. Medina finished the game going 2-2 with two walks and scored two runs. Koerper ended the second game going 3-4 with three RBI and junior Michael Paulson also went 2-4 with two RBI on the night.

NM State was unable to get any more runners to score but the pitching staff held the Cougars to six hits and only two runs throughout the remainder of the game, one in the fifth and one in the seventh inning.

Junior Robert Kraft pitched five full innings and gave up one run on five hits. He also struck out two batters on his way to earning his first win of the season and now sits at 1-0.
