RUSTON, La. – The New Mexico State baseball team (23-18) swept Louisiana Tech after winning 4-1 in game two of a doubleheader, Sunday, April 21 at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, La.

Freshman Kevin Carswell got the win in the seven-inning non-conference affair, working 6.2 innings and is now 1-0 on the year. He held the Bulldogs scoreless until a La. Tech hitter tallied a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.  Trey Higginbotham came in for Carswell, but faced just one batter after allowing a walk.  Freshman Kevin Piersol was given the save as he entered the game with bases loaded and the tying run on first. Piersol threw just one pitch and got the out on a groundout to the Aggie shortstop.

“It was a good day and it was well pitched. Kevin Carswell did a nice job all the way around,” head coach Rocky Ward said.  “We also played clean defense this weekend. It was great to win four here in Ruston and that is hard to do.”

The Aggies scored three runs in the top of the first with RBIs from Parker Hipp, Bobby Lecount and Taylor Noyer.  Hipp and junior Tanner Rust each had a 2-of-4 day at the plate with Hipp adding an RBI to his season total (37).

Leftfielder Brandon Cooper walked in the sixth then steals two bases before crossing the plate on a Michael Medina RBI single up the middle.

NM State stays on the road and heads to Lubbock, Texas to face Texas Tech in a single midweek game.  First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. (MT), Tuesday, April 23 and can be heard on the radio in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570.  Live stats will be available online at www.NMStateSports.com free of charge.
