LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Aggies defeated the Alumni Team in the Annual Alumni Game at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, Feb. 9.
The Aggies tallied 13 runs on eight hits and committed two errors while the Alumni team marked its six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Starting pitcher and Las Cruces native Michael Ormseth pitched a strong 5.2 innings, striking out seven batters and giving up just one run.
"It was good to get Ormseth out there today, especially because there was that 'in-game' feel today," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We were looking to see how guys would react in game-situations and overall it was a good day."
The (current) Aggies opened the game scoring four runs off Alumni starter Beto Romo, with Michael Medina, Tanner Rust, Kyle Phillips and Bobby Lecount each crossing the plate. After marking another run in the bottom of the second, NM State tallied five runs in the bottom of the third as the Alumni pitching allowed four runs to score on wild pitches.
It was former Aggie catcher Ben Harty who had a big day for the Alumni team. He blasted a grand slam in the top of the sixth to pull the score to 13-6. Former Aggie All-American Bryan Marquez also had a good day as he played at short stop the entire game, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two stolen bases.
"The Alumni team had a blast today and it was good to see guys like Harty and Marquez do well," Ward said. "Brought back some good and fun memories."
The Aggies open the regular season with a four-game series against UW-Milwaukee starting next Friday. For complete information on the Aggie baseball team, go to www.NMStateSports.com.
