SAN MARCOS, TEXAS-The New Mexico State University track and field team wrapped up its last regular season meet at the 2012 Bobcat Classic with two first place finishes.
"Overall it was not too bad this weekend," said head track and field coach Orin Richburg. "Now it's the time to keep everything intact for the conference meet."
Junior LaSasha Aldredge continued her strong performances in the 400m when she finished first overall in the 400m with a time of 54.19. Sophomore Gael Sanchez finished first overall in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:31.84, which placed her eighth all-time for NM State.
Two Aggies made impressive finishes in the 200m. Aldredge finished third overall in the 200m with a time of 24.12, which is both a career-best and places her fifth all-time in the NM State record books. Sophomore Alishia Perkins placed sixth overall in the 200m with a time of 24.22.
Senior Melanie Clay finished ninth overall in the 800m with a time of 2:13.85, which exactly one second short of matching her career-best time for the event.
Freshman Diana Hawk finished the 1,500m in a time of 4:44.36, good for fifth overall.
Senior Jndia Cleveland finished fourth overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.51, which was less than one second from matching her career-best time and the current all-time school record.
In the relays, the Aggies finished fourth overall in the 4x100m relay with a time of 46.50. The 4x100m relay team was composed of Perkins, Aldredge, and freshmen Jenna Banegas and Kendra Walker.
In the field events, Cleveland finished third overall in the long jump with a mark of 5.90m. Freshman Mareka Clark finished third overall in the triple jump with a distance of 12.27m. Freshman Alexandra Nichols marked a distance of 39.90m in the javelin throw, which placed her fourth overall in the event and eighth all-time in NM State history.
"It was a good weekend for our jumpers, we got some more productivity out of that area this weekend," Richburg said.
The Aggies have the upcoming weekend off from competition to prepare for the Western Athletic Conference 2012 Outdoor Championships, scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, in Moscow, Idaho.
