LaSasha Aldredge breaks another school record at UTEP Springtime Invite

EL PASO, TEXAS-The New Mexico State University track and field team competed in the UTEP Springtime Invitational on Saturday, March 24, highlighted with a new school record by junior LaSasha Aldredge in the 400m.

Aldredge placed first overall in the 400m with a time of 54.17, which eclipsed the previous NM State overall record set by Aldredge in 2011.  Aldredge was also named the Western Athletic Conference track Athlete of the Week due to her performance at the Willie Williams Classic.

NM State earned five second-place finishes on the day.  Senior Melanie Clay finished second overall in the 800m with a time of 2:16.3.  Sophomore Zoe Meade tied for second overall in the high jump with a mark of 1.63m.  Senior Jndia Cleveland placed second overall in the long jump, notching a distance of 5.73m.  Freshman Mareka Clark finished second overall in the triple jump with a distance of 12.33m, good for third all-time in the NM State record books. 

NM State tallied a number of third-place overall finishes as well.  Sophomore Rylie Hightower finished strong in the 5,000m for NM State, finishing third overall with a time of 19:24.46.  Cleveland finished third overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.16, which was 0.1 seconds off from tying her career-best time.  Senior Bellosie Frazier finished third overall in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.80m and senior Kelsey Brennan finished third overall in the javelin throw with a distance of 44.15m.

Two NM State school records were set in two different relay events.  The NM State 4x100m relay team finished fourth overall with a time of 46.14, which is good for sixth all-time for NM State.  Aldredge, sophomore Alishia Perkins and freshmen Jenna Banegas and Kendra Walker set the new mark for the Aggies.  NM State also finished second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:45.76, good for fourth all-time for NM State.  Meade, Clay, Aldredge and Cleveland ran the 4x400m for the Aggies.

Overall, NM State finished the day with 16 top-5 finishes and four new records for the NM State record books. 

NM State will compete next at the New Mexico Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday, April 6.
