Track and Field Finishes Third at WAC Championship

BOISE, IDAHO-The New Mexico State University track and field team finished third at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, the highest finish the team has ever earned since joining the conference. 

NM State finished the WAC Championships with eight First Team All-WAC honors.  Sophomore Zoe Meade finished second overall in the pentathlon with a total of 3,612 points.  Senior Jndia Cleveland finished third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.67.  Cleveland also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.84m.  Junior LaSasha Aldredge finished second in the 400m with a time of 55.21, which is also a new school record.  Sophomore Alishia Perkins finished third in the 200m with a time of 24.30, also earning a new school record as well.  Juniors Courtney and Camille Schultz each earned First Team All-WAC honors in the 5,000m by finishing first and third respectively.  Courtney finished with a time of 17:16.86 and Camille finished with 17:29.07.  Senior Bellosie Frazier finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 18.10m, which is also a new school record. 

NM State also combined to earn seven Second Team All-WAC honors as well.  Freshman Jenna Banegas finished fifth overall in the 60m with a time of 7.63.  Senior Madelyn Stoltze finished fifth in the 5,000m with a time of 17:50.45, giving NM State three of the top five finishes in the event.  Courtney and Camille also finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 3,000m with times of 10:00.36 and 10:05.30.  Freshman Mareka Clark finished fifth overall in the triple jump with a distance of 11.80m.

 NM State also earned Second Team All-WAC honors in the distance medley and the 4x400m.  In the distance medley, freshman Diana Hawk, sophomore Carly Porter, sophomore Kayla Nagunst and sophomore Jenna Padilla ran for sixth place and a time of 12:49.76.  In the 4x400, Meade, Aldredge, Cleveland and senior Melanie Clay ran for a time of 3:46.22 and fourth place overall.

"It was a good performance overall," said head track and field coach Orin Richburg.  "Most of our points came at the top end of the events."

The next scheduled event for the track and field team is the NCAA Last Chance Meet on Saturday, March 3, followed by the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday, March 9.  NM State will begin the outdoor track and field season on Friday, March 16, in Tucson, Ariz., with the Dave Murray Distance Carnival.
