Aggies Break Two School Records at Texas Tech Open

Lubbock, Texas - The New Mexico State women's track and field squad broke two school records at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas this weekend.

LaSasha Aldredge broke the record in the 400m after finishing with a time of 54.35. After the conversion because of altitude Aldredge's time is 54.46, which still beats the old record set by Shyrell Hobson in 2003 with a time of 54.71.

Also breaking her own school record in the 400m hurdles on Friday was Jndia Cleveland. Cleveland finished in first place in Lubbock with a time of 1:00.33, which beat her previous school record of 1:00.60 set earlier this season. Cleveland also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 5.85m (19-02.50) and third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.10, putting her third all-time in that category.

Also finishing well for the NM State was the 4x100m relay team of Alishia Perkins, Leah Benton, Aldredge, and Kaylah Burton. The foursome finished second with a time of 46.14, which moves them into fifth on the Aggies all-time list.

Perkins also placed third in the 100m and the 200m with times of 11.92 and 24.24 respectively.

Other Aggies doing well were Samantha Thompson and Chelsa McDonnell who finished first and second in the 1500m with times of 4:38.77 and 4:44.08. Thompson also finished fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:16.50.

In the 400m hurdles finishing after Cleveland's record setting time were Alyssa Flores who finished second with a time of 1:04.43 and Jessica Payne who finished fifth in a time of 1:06.53.

In the women's triple jump NM State had two girls in the top three, with Horlexus Willis finishing second with a jump of 11.44m (37-06.50) and Deserae Cota finishing third with a leap of 11.05m (36-03.00).

Also competing at the meet was senior volleyball player Kelsey Brennan who competed in the javelin throw for the Aggies. Brennan took home second place with a toss of 41.66m (136-08), which is good enough for eighth on the NM State all-time list.

The Aggies continue their season next Friday, April, 29th and Saturday, April, 30th at the Texas State Bobcat Invitatioinal in San Marcos, Texas. The action is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. (MT) on Friday with the hammer throw and continue at 9 a.m. (MT) on Saturday with all other events.
