LAS CRUCES, N.M. (June 9)-New Mexico State incoming freshman swimmer Emily Nightingale qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 200 backstroke, June 8. She is now eligible for the trials, June 25-July 2, in Omaha, Neb.

At the Texas Senior Circuit meet in Mansfield, Texas, Nightingale posted a time of 2:17.33 in the preliminaries and then swam 2:17.92 in the finals. Both performances were under the cut and almost three seconds faster than her previous best time. Aggie signees Cassandra Rupp, Nicole Brennecke and Mariah Morrell are also competing at the Texas meet.

"Our team is doing a great job in the off-season, and to have an incoming freshman qualify for such a prestigious event is very exciting," head coach Rick Pratt said. "Training year round and having long course ambitions have to be a part of this process and our team is doing a great job this summer."

Joining Nightingale, Brennecke, Morrell and Rupp in the Aggies' upcoming freshman class this fall are swimmers Jona Helena Bjarnadottir, Chelsey Reber, Moranda Madero, MacKenzie Soper and divers Audrey Ruiz and Lauren Reifel.
