LAS CRUCES, N.M. (May 11)-The New Mexico State swimming and diving team concluded the record-breaking 2010-11 season with an awards banquet recently. The successful season culminated with 10 school records falling at the WAC Championships.

“We have so much to celebrate this year and it is important to come together in our banquet at the end of the season,” head coach Rick Pratt said. “Saying goodbye to our seniors is hard but we’re really excited for the next chapter of their lives. To have such fond memories is what it’s all about, and in the end who we all become through our experiences is far more important than how fast we swim or how well we dive.”

Freshman Tricia Kiss made a significant impact in her first season in Las Cruces and was named team MVP and freshman of the year. Another new edition to the squad, junior Carly Smith garnered the diver of the year award.

Seniors Kelly Conrad and Kelly Runestrand were honored with the coaches’ award and weight room award, respectively. The duo was also recognized after serving as team captains in 2010-11. Sophomore Alex Fenton was named the most improved this season, while sophomore Eryn Murphy earned the academic award.

“We also announced our captains for 2011-12, and I am excited for Brittney Moore and Gina Palombit to step into that roll,” Pratt said. “They have both changed and developed tremendously during their years at NM State and are already amazing leaders with our team.

“It is a position that we discuss about a lot, and it is something that we do not take lightly. The best teams are the ones who support each other the best on all levels, having captains that can help foster that environment is extremely important and certainly one of the strengths of our squad.”
