LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State swimming and diving team will open the 2013-14 campaign by hosting the annual Crimson and White intrasquad meet Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the NM State Natatorium. The event, which starts at 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.
The Aggie squad will be split into a Crimson team and a White team and will be pitted against each other in 12 events, including eight individual races, two relay races and two diving competitions.
Head coach Rick Pratt returns for his ninth season at the helm of the NM State program. Pratt will lead a team that finished fifth at the WAC Championships last season.
“Despite this being an intrasquad meet it is an important exercise and something that our team takes very seriously,” Pratt said. “We've been fine tuning our skills and working harder every week. We're looking for our improved skills to show up on Wednesday and we're really excited to see the team compete.”
The Aggies return 16 swimmers from last season’s squad, including junior Jessica Legge, who was named outstanding swimmer of the year for NM State a season ago. Legge won two gold medals at the 2013 WAC Championships, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She also broke her own school record in the 200 individual medley.
Also returning for the Aggies are all three divers from a year ago. The diving team was led by sophomore Audrey Ruiz last season. As a freshman, Ruiz competed in the NCAA Zone “E” Diving Championships, becoming the first NM State diver to compete in zones in four years.
Wednesday’s Crimson and White meet will be a chance to showcase Legge, Ruiz and the rest of the Aggie swimming and diving team. It will also be the first time fans can get a glimpse of the Aggies’ six new incoming freshmen.
“This is also an important meet for our team to come together and support each other and have some fun,” Pratt said. “We're looking at our lineup and this meet will let us see where we stand and how we are going to incorporate our new swimmers into the lineup for our first meet against Air Force.”
NM State opens up its 2013-14 regular season against the Air Force Academy on Friday, Oct. 25, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
