LAS CRUCES, N.M.— The New Mexico State Cross Country men’s and women’s teams performed well during the Texas Tech-NM State-UTEP Triangular to begin the 2014 season in Ruidoso.

The women’s team finished second overall as senior Diana Hawk placed third overall with a time of 17:48.60 for three miles. Megan McNally finished seventh with an 18:40.60 time.

Freshman Crissey Amberg placed ninth against UTEP and Texas Tech with a time of 18:50.90, while sister Cassey Amberg finished 11th (18:56.30) followed by Mikayla Pulliam at 13th (19:15.70).

“Overall we had a strong freshman performance as a women’s team. Our veterans did what they do best,” assistant coach Christopher Huff said. “Diana Hawk ran close to 14 seconds faster than she did last year, which is a great improvement. Our freshman really performed well and stepped up, being three-fifths of our team.”

The men’s team concluded the first meet of the season with a third overall finish. NM State was led by senior Hab Rubio at fourth overall and a time of 21:11.30 for four miles.

Freshman Jerme Santistevan finished seventh at a time of 21:19.30. Nathan Starr finished 12th (21:41.60), Tyler Forde at 14th (22:12.10) followed by Evan Bekes at 15th (22:18.20) during the Triangular.

“Our lead runner Rubio ran very well with a good and smart race placing among Texas Tech and UTEP’s top runners,” Huff said. “Our freshman really came into play as well. Santistevan was right there as a true freshman and Forde followed right behind. The team was balanced across the board.”

The Aggies travel to Albuquerque to compete in the UNM Lobo Invitational on Sept. 6.
