Aggies Conclude Regular Season at Bronco Invite

SUNNYVALE, CALIF.-The New Mexico State University cross country team concluded its last regular season meet at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, October 13, including a first and second finish by seniors Courtney and Camille Schultz.

The women's team finished third as a team with a score of 111, just one point behind Long Beach State, which finished second with a score of 110.  California State-San Marcos finished first with a score of 104.  A total of 16 teams competed in the women's 5K, including PAC-12 teams UCLA and Colorado.

The men's team finished eighth as a team with a score of 213 in the 8K, shortly behind Sacramento State, which finished seventh with a score of 208.  The University of San Francisco finished first with a score of 146.

Courtney finished first overall with a time of 17:00.5 and Camille finished 14 seconds later when she finished second overall with a time of 17:14.6.  This is the second time this season the Schultz twins finished in the top two spots overall.  It is also the fourth time the Schultz sisters finished in the top two spots for NM State.

Junior Jenna Padilla finished third for NM State and 28th overall with a time of 17:57.7 and sophomore Diana Hawk finished fourth for NM State and 43rd overall with a time of 18:09.2.  Sophomore Caroline Lewiecki rounded out the top five for NM State when she finished fifth for NM State and 88th overall with a time of 18:51.5.

Junior Gael Sanchez and Rylie Hightower finished sixth and seventh for NM State respectively when Sanchez finished sixth with a time of 18:56.9 and Hightower with a time of 18:57.6.

"Coming out to California was definitely a good test for the women's team," assistant cross country coach Christopher Huff said.  "It gave our girls a lot of confidence and they are right where they need to be right now."

On the men's side senior Jonah Ruybalid finished first for NM State and 15th overall with a time of 24:28.8.  Fellow senior Terry Williams finished second for NM State and 22nd overall with a time of 24:37.5.  Freshman Paul Raymond continued to make strides when he finished third for NM State and 44th overall with a time of 24:58.0.  Senior Ian Ruybalid followed up by finishing fourth for NM State and 59th overall with a time of 25:10.6.  Senior Ryan Fenton rounded out the top five for NM State when he finished fifth for NM State and 73rd overall with a time of 25:22.1. 

Senior Robert Selph finished right behind Fenton for sixth for NM State and 74th overall with a time of 25:22.5.  Senior Anthony Ellis finished seventh for NM State with a time of 25:28.7 and junior Kevin Palmer finished eighth for NM State with a time of 25:38.0.  Kevin Hemphill and Christopher Silva also competed for the Aggies.

"The men's side has a strong group right now," Huff said.  "This weekend gave them a lot of confidence going into the conference meet knowing they can run and compete with anybody out there."

The Aggies will have next week off before heading to Ruston, La., for the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27.
