Aggies Perform Well at Big Road Test

LAWRENCE, KAN.-The New Mexico State University cross country teams completed the Rim Rock Collegiate Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday, Sept. 29th, with impressive team results in both events.

The women's team finished fifth overall with 138 points and the men's team finished sixth overall with 184 points.

The women's team ran its first official 6K of the season and finished fifth overall with a total of 65 points.  The race was highlighted by a second overall finish by senior Courtney Schultz who finished with a time of 20:30.90.  Schultz finished behind Rebecca Addison of Michigan by less than one second.  Senior Camille Schultz finished second for NM State and 16th overall with a time of 21:14.00.  The combined results of the Schultz sisters helped NM State finish above some of the top programs in the region, including host Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Nebraska.

Sophomore Diana Hawk followed up the Schultz sisters by finishing third for NM State and 49th overall with a time of 22:32.40.  Hawk's third finish for NM State is her best result for the team of the season.  Freshman Sarabel Bojorquez finished fourth for NM State and 52nd overall with a time of 22:37.80.  Fellow freshman Mayra Chavez finished close behind Bojorquez for fifth for NM State and 54th overall with a time of 22:39.70.  Junior Rylie Hightower finished sixth for NM State and 80th overall with a time of 23:26.30. 

Junior Gael Sanchez and sophomore Caroline Lewiekci finished seventh and eighth overall for NM State respectively with times of 23:38.40 and 23:40.00.  The two also finished simultaneously overall.  Jenna Padilla followed up by finishing ninth for NM State with a time of 23:55.20.

The consistency by the top runners for the men's team helped the squad finish sixth overall.  The men's team finished above strong programs such as Nebraska and Kansas State.

In the men's event, senior Jonah Ruybalid finished first for NM State and 29th overall with a time of 24:45.90 in the 8K.  Fellow senior Terry Williams finished close behind for second for NM State and 34th overall with a time of 24:52.40.  Senior Anthony Ellis cracked the top 50 overall when he finished 49th overall and third for NM State with a time of 25:12.40. 

Four Aggies finished close together between the 58th and 63rd spot.  Freshman Paul Raymond finished 58th overall and fourth for NM State with a time of 25:20.60, followed closely by senior Kevin Hemphill who finished 59th overall and fifth for NM State with a time of 25:21.10.  Senior Ian Ruybalid finished 61st overall and sixth for NM State with a time of 25:25.30.  Senior Ryan Fenton finished 63rd overall and seventh for NM State with a time of 25:30.70.
