LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 7)-In the home opener, the New Mexico State soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Sam Houston State in overtime.

At halftime, the Aggies (1-3-1) and Bearkats (3-4-0) were tied at 0-0. NM State had a 4-2 advantage in shot attempted, and sophomore midfielder Katie Smith led the way with two shots on goal.

Despite the Kats having a slight edge in shots, 9-6, in the second half, Smith fired a shot with less than three minutes in regulation that danced around the goal before freshman goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton grabbed it before it crossed the line.

For the second time in three matches for the Aggies, the game was scoreless after 90 minutes of action. In extra time, SHSU junior midfielder Tricia Mallory ended the game with a goal in the 95th minute.

The Aggies continue their home opening weekend, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m., when they host Weber State.
