LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 17)-The New Mexico State soccer team fell to San Jose State, 2-1. The Aggies moved to 7-7-2 and 1-5-0 in WAC play while the Spartans improved to 8-6-1 and 2-1-1.
“I thought we did a nice job making it 1-1,” head coach Michael Needham said. “We scored a nice goal on a free kick. Right now we make little mistakes when we can’t make mistakes, and you can’t do that in conference play and win.”
San Jose State scored early to take a 1-0 lead after four minutes of action when freshman midfielder/forward Kayla Santacruz recorded her fifth goal of the year.
In the 39th minute, the Aggies tied the match, 1-1, when freshman midfielder Daisy Hernandez headed a ball into the net on a free kick. The goal was her career first.
The Spartans captured a 2-1 lead when junior forward/midfielder Maria Esquivias scored on a rebound in the 70th minute.
The Aggies travel to Honolulu for the final WAC road match of the year against Hawai’i, Oct. 24.
