LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 19)-In the final non-conference home match of the season, the New Mexico State soccer team overpowered Lamar, 4-0. The Aggies recorded their third consecutive shutout and improved to 5-1-2 while the Cardinals fell to 2-6-0.

For the second consecutive contest, sophomore forward/midfielder Crystal Burns guided the Aggies with a pair of goals.

“I thought it was a good effort, and we played a complete 90 minutes,” head coach Michael Needham said. “We knew they were going to play hard and physical, but we did a good job of playing soccer and found our wide players today. Overall, it was a positive performance before going on the road for two games next week.”

At halftime, the Aggies held a 1-0 lead after a goal from sophomore forward Cassie De Leon in the seventh minute of the match. Burns set-up the score with a nice cross from the left side of the box that allowed the De Leon tap in.

NM State increased the lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Burns scored on a strike that sailed over freshman goalkeeper Kylie Robinett’s fingertips.

During the 83rd minute, sophomore forward Veronica Subu gave the Aggies a 3-0 advantage on a breakaway from the right side. Then just two minutes later, Subu found Burns at the left corner of the box for the final score of the match.

The Aggies conclude non-conference play at Northern Colorado, Sept. 24, and Wyoming, Sept. 26.
