Aggies Play Well to Earn Conference Win Over Seattle U

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Juniors Desiree Scott and Lauren Loerch tallied 11 kills each to lead the Aggies to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) win over Seattle U. in the Pan American Center, Monday, Oct. 29. 

Scott and Loerch each scored 13 points on the night while Scott was very efficient in the middle once again posting a .409 hitting percentage.  The Aggies posted a .333 hitting percentage as a team with red shirt freshman Gwen Murphy adding to the cause with a .750 hitting percentage for herself.  She marked six kills on eight swings while also getting in on four blocks, two of them solo.

Sophomore Meredith Hays finished the night with a team-high 16 kills on 38 swings with four errors for a .316 attack percentage.  Hays also marked two service aces as the team concluded the evening acing the Redhawks nine times. Junior Preslie Alexander also played efficiently getting in on nine points as she put down eight kills on offense and had one block assist.

The Aggies won the first three points of the match, starting with a service ace by Hays and a block by. Back-to-back service aces from junior Stephanie Ziegler, who was one of three Aggies with two aces, extended the Aggies' lead to 12-5, but Seattle U responded with a 7-1 scoring run to pull to within 17-14. Freshman Nathalie Castellanos would eventually seal the 25-20 to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

The Aggies jumped out to a 12-6 lead in set two that was higlighed by kills from Scott and Hays.The Redhawks scored six straight points and eventually took an 18-15 lead but NM State rallied back going on a 10-3 scoring rally that was led by Alexander as she posted a block assist, two kills, and a service ace. She finished set two with five kills on eight swings to lead the Aggies to a 25-21 win.

After losing three of the first four points of the third set, Seattle U went on a 5-1 scoring run to take a 6-4 lead. The Aggies responded with three straight points and eventually extended their lead to 13-9. The Redhawks took advantage of NM State's errors to win 25-23 and take the match to a fourth set

Hays led NM State to start the fourth set with two kills and a service ace, giving the Aggies a 7-2 lead. The Aggies outscoring the Redhawks 9-4 to take a double-digit lead before picking up a 25-16 win that was closed out with a Scott kill.

Junior Ciara Brown split the setting duties and earned 26 assists and eight digs, and freshman Taylor Livoti collected 24 assists and six digs. Junior defensive specialist  Hannah Walker led the Aggies 12 digs.

NM State moves to 17-7 on the year and 10-3 league play to sit in second in the Western Athletic Conference standings.  Idaho is in third after losing to Denver in a five-set match.
