Aggie Volleyball Wins Second Straight Match of the Season

DEKALB, Ill. (Aug. 25, 2012) - The New Mexico State volleyball team won its second straight match of the year after defeating North Dakota State 3-1 (28-16, 12-25, 25-17, 25-22) on day two of the Northern Illinois Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.

Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Hays led the way with a match-high 25 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the year, while junior Ciara Brown had a team-high 31 assists to control the offense.  Freshman Taylor Livoti added 14 assists as the Aggies ran a 6-2 offense once again.

"I thought we got out played emotionally, and they served the ball well and they took it to us at points in the match," head coach Mike Jordan said.  "We have to work on our ball control and we have to continue to work hard defensively."

Junior Lauren Loerch added nine kills and hit .444 on the afternoon with only one hitting-error.  Junior Preslie Alexander was the only other Aggie with double-digit kill figures as she had 10 in the match.  Junior Stephanie Ziegler marked a match-high 16 digs while NM State ended the match with 56 as a team.

The Aggies were down 22-16 in the first set but battled back to win 28-26. Hays led the way with an unbelievable 10 kills in the set on 14 swings.  NM State scored four consecutive points to pull within a point and took the lead at 25-24 when Desiree Scott and Bradley Nash combined for a block.  The Aggies closed out the set with a kill by Hays and a kill by junior Lauren Loerch.

NM State dropped set two 25-12 after the Bison defense opened the set with four blocks and a couple of aces to take an early 8-2 lead.  The Aggies pulled to within five at 9-4 but NDSU pulled away by as many as 14 at 21-7.

NM State took the lead in the match after beating the Bison 25-17 in the third set.  The Aggies scored the first seven points of the set and never allowed NDSU to pull within three points with the NM State playing well all around.

The Aggies took an early 6-0 lead and pulled away at 11-2 but NDSU did not give up as it pulled to within one at 23-22.  Freshman outside hitter Nathalie Castellanos tallied a kill off a touch to take the score to 24-22 before the Bison tallied an attack error to give NM State is second win of the tournament.

The Aggies now wait to take on host team Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. (MT) on Victor E. Court in DeKalb, Ill.  Fans can catch the action on the radio on KSNM AM 570 with Kyle Doperalski giving the play-by-play action.
