LAS CRUCES - After dropping set one, the New Mexico State volleyball team (17-10, 11-2 WAC) went on to defeat San Jose State (8-19, 3-10 WAC) in the Pan American Center, Saturday, Nov. 6, with two Aggies posting double-doubles on the night.
Senior Kayleigh Giddens posted her 10th double-double of the year with a match-high 22 kills and 13 digs, while junior setter Jennah DeVries marked her seventh double-double with 51 assists and a match-high 15 digs leading the way to a 3-1 win (27-29, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20).
The Aggies came out a little sluggish in set one, losing 29-27, marking 13 attack errors as a team. NM State fought throughout the set as there were 15 ties and seven lead changes. Giddens finished the set with nine kills but it was not enough for the Aggies as SJSU had only four attack errors.
"We had a few unforced errors to start the match, but we were able to turn it around in set two," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Michelle Kuester and Rocio Gutierrez came in and gave us a good lift, while the rest of the team followed their lead."
NM State took an early 13-5 lead in set two, but a 9-1 scoring rally by the Spartans took the score to 17-16 in favor of the visiting team. A few errors by the Spartans took the momentum away and the Aggies took advantage with Giddens closing out the set with a kill. The Aggies took set two 25-19 with only four attack errors.
Set three was dominated by the Aggies as the team marked a .324 hitting percentage while holding the Spartans to a .057 hitting percentage. Gutierrez tallied four kills in the set before finishing with 10 on the night.
The Aggies won set four 25-20 with Kuester one of her three kills in the set. She also had six total blocks on the night with NM State finishing with 13 total team blocks, which ties the high for the season.
