PROVO, Utah - The New Mexico State volleyball team fell 3-0 (8-25, 17-25, 14-25) to No. 12 BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, Nov. 30, in Provo, Utah.

The Aggies were held to a negative hitting percentage while BYU posted a .351 hitting percentage as a team.  NM State was defeated by a tough Cougar team that posted 12 total team blocks and marked only 11 attack errors.

The Aggies finished the year with a 22-11 overall record, while winning the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 21. BYU, who moves to 27-3 on the year, will face Oklahoma in the second round at 7 p.m. (MT) in Provo, Utah.

"BYU is a great team. They played well and they did a great job of blocking, and even more so at digging the ball," head coach Mike Jordan said.  "I was disappointed at our performance and effort tonight. You can't pass the ball that poorly and expect to win."

Junior Lauren Loerch marked a team-high seven kills against the Cougars and sophomore Meredith Hays added six.  It was a disappointing night for the middles as junior Desiree Scott had only one kill and junior Preslie Alexander posted three.  Red shirt freshman Bradley Nash and libero Stephanie Ziegler led the Aggies with seven digs each.

"Hopefully we will be able to use this as some motivation in the off-season to get better," Jordan said.

The Aggies fell behind early on dropping the first three points.  BYU went on a on 9-0 scoring rally to extend its lead to 10 at 12-2.  After the Cougars used a 10-5 point run to go up 22-7. BYU finished the set winning 25-8 to go up one set to zero.

It seemed like NM State came to life in set two taking a 4-2 lead early on, but BYU jumped back in the set and tied it up at 5-5.  The Aggies fought but could not get any momentum and fell behind 15-10 midway thru set No. 2.  The Aggies allowed a 5-1 run before BYU took a 20-11 lead.  NM State scored five of the next seven points to squeeze the lead to six but eventually lost 25-17.

The Aggies were blocked three consecutive times to start set three before falling behind 5-1.  NM State scored four consecutive points to tie it up at five-all but the Cougars regained the momentum and took full advantage of that to go up 16-9.  After the Aggies fell behind 22-14, they were aced to fall 25-14, ending the 2012 season.
