2007 (Junior): Richardson was the Aggies’ starting safety in all 13 games in 2007. He was second on the team in tackles with 108, while also collecting three tackles-for-a-loss, one sack, an interception, four pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Richardson is just the third safety to collect over 100 tackles since 2000. Against Southeastern Louisiana (8/30), Richardson started the season with eight tackles, while recording his first career sack. Versus New Mexico (9/8) he recorded nine tackles, followed by a seven tackle performance against UTEP (9/15). Versus Boise State (10/7) Richardson recorded his first career double digit tackle performance with 13. He also collected a pass break-up against the Broncos. Against Idaho (10/20) Richardson tallied a career-high 16 tackles. He then recorded 10 tackles against San Jose State (10/11) and 12 tackles against Fresno State (11/30). Richardson recorded at least four tackles in each game he played and at least seven tackles in eight games.
2006 (Sophomore): Richardson played safety for the Aggies in 2006, starting the last seven games of the season. He also saw action on special teams. On the season, Richardson tallied 71 tackles, two interceptions, three tackles-for-a-loss, three fumble recoveries, two pass break-ups and a forced fumble. His 71 tackles were third on the team in 2006. In his first start at safety, Richardson proved his status, recording a career-high 15 tackles and his first career fumble recovery against No. 15 Boise State (10/15). Over the first five games of the season, Richardson had just 16 tackles, but over the remaining seven games he tallied 55 tackles. Versus Utah State (11/25) he recorded his second double figure tackle game with 10. In the season finale against Louisiana Tech, he recorded nine tackles and an interception.
2005 (Redshirt Freshman): Richardson did not play during the 2005 season.
2004 (Freshman): Richardson didn’t see action during the 2004 season.
High School: Richardson was a four-time Athlete of the Year at Chandler High. He was a two-time first team All-Region selection at defensive back and a second team All-State selection as a senior. He was named to the All-East Valley team his senior year. He also served as captain of the football and basketball teams.
Personal: Derrick was born in Denver, Colo., and is the son of Norine and Eric Richardson. He is planning to major in electrical engineering.
