Aggies Conclude Third Day of WAC Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The New Mexico State track and field team finished the third day of the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Fruday, May 10 and qualified eight Aggies for finals competition on Saturday, May 11.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, the Aggies were led by junior Gael Sanchez who finished with a time of 11:14.42 and earned four points for NM State.  Sanchez’s time moves her to fourth all-time for the Aggies and passes Caroline Lewiekcie and her time of 11:19.67.

In the preliminary round of the 1,500m the Aggies were paced by sophomore Diana Hawk who finished with a time of 4:34.51.  She qualifies for the final round on Saturday and had the best time in the round.

A day after taking second in the heptathlon on Thursday evening, junior Zoe Meade competed in the long jump and earned two points for NM State with a jump of 18-11.25 (5.77m).  Meade also competed in the 400m hurdles and qualified for the finals tomorrow with a time of 1:01.95.

In the prelims of the 400m dash senior LaSasha Aldredge finished with a time of 53.96 which was the best in the field.  She was followed by junior Brianna Cromartie who finished with a time of 55.10 seconds, which was third best in the round.  Both Aldredge and Cromartie qualify for the Saturday final.

Aldredge, Cromartie and junior Alishia Perkins qualified for the finals in the 200m, with Perkins finishing with a time of 23.73 with Aldredge right behind her with a time of 23.76.  Cromartie finished with a time of 24.04.

Perkins also competed in the 100m dash and qualified for the finals with a time of 11.85.

Senior Camile Schultz finished sixth in the 10,000m run with a time of 37:57.31 and earned three points for the Aggies. 

“We’ve got our work cut out for us tomorrow,” head coach Orin Richburg said, “but everyone that we expected to get through to the finals got through.”

Competition wraps up, Saturday May 11, beginning at 10 a.m. (MT) in Arlington, Texas.
