RENO, Nev. – The New Mexico State baseball team tried to get a come-from-behind victory but fell short losing 8-7 at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. Sunday, April 19.
Down 4-1 heading into the eighth, the Aggies scored six runs on eight hits including three consecutive home runs. Senior Bryan Marquez started the home run slide with a three-run bomb over the left centerfield wall. Junior Mike Sodders followed that with a homer to left field then junior Leo Aguirre hit one the other way for his sixth home run of the year. Marquez continues to lead the Western Athletic Conference with 18 homers on the season.
Nevada came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth putting up four runs on five hits to go up 8-7. With the loss, NM State falls to 32-8 overall and 7-5 in WAC play, while Nevada goes up by one-half game in the standings at 7-5 in league play.
The Aggies finished the day with seven runs on 14 hits, while the Wolf Pack scored eight runs on 12 hits.
NM State posted one run on three hits in the top of the first inning but were unable to get another base hit until the seventh inning and didn’t score until the top of the big six run eighth inning.
Senior Jeff Farnham finished the day 3-for-5 while scoring twice and is now hitting .409 on the season. Marquez, who is hitting .391 on the year, finished with three RBIs, whiel Sodders was 2-of-4 with two RBIs while crossing the plate once.
Senior Sebastien Vendette started on the mound for NM State and had a no-decision as he worked seven innings and tallied six strikouts, taking his season total to 43.
The Aggies return home after going 4-4 on a 12-day, eight-game trip to host Hawai’i in a four-game series at Presley Askew Field starting Friday, April 24 at 6:05pm (MDT).
