Las Cruces, N.M. – The NM State men’s golf will hit the links for the first time since early November this coming week to compete in the All-American Intercollegiate in Spring, Texas, February 23-24. The tournament is hosted by the University of Houston and will be played at the par 72, 7,220 yard Cypresswood Country Club.
“We’ve had a three month break from playing tournament golf,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “The spring season the stakes are raised. The goal of the first tournament of the spring is to get off to a good start and build momentum that you can carry the rest of the way. We are still trying to knock off some of the rust from the long break but I feel good about where we are as a team right now. I think we are ahead of the game right now then we have been in year’s past. But this weekend is important for us to get off on that good start.”
Last season at the 2008 All-American Intercollegiate the Aggies finished fourth overall as a team with a three round score of 33-over par, 897. Josh Stewart finished tied for third overall with a 4-over par, 220.
NM State will face some tough competition at the All-American including Houston, Cal State-Northridge, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas Southern, Texas State and Arkansas-Little Rock,
The Aggies finished the fall season with a seventh-place finish at the 2008 Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in Hawai’i. The Aggies carded a team score of 7-under par, 281 in the final round of play, finishing the tournament at 8-under par, 856.
Senior Travis Reid led the Aggies the entire tournament, with three straight rounds of 2-under par, 70, finishing the tournament at 6-under par, 216. Reid placed in a tie for 6th overall. Steward tied for 25th overall with a three round score of 2-under par, 214.
The fall season saw the NM State men’s golf team won two tournaments, three top-5 finishes and four top-10 finishes.
The tournament will consist of 36-holes on Monday, February 23 and 18-holes on Tuesday, February 24.
