Head Coach Darin Spence made forward Kayla Henry the fifth member of his incoming recruiting class today.

Las Cruces, N.M. – New Mexico State Head Women’s Basketball Coach Darin Spence is pleased to announce the signing of his fourth spring signee and fifth overall for the 2006-07 season. 5’11” forward Kayla Henry (San Diego, Calif.) will be a junior next season after playing the last two years at Grossmont Junior College in El Cajon, Calif.

Henry was named to the All-Pacific Coast Conference First Team as a sophomore this past season after leading the Griffins to a 17-14 record, 6-4 in conference. She led the team in scoring (18.7 points per game) and rebounding (9.2 rebounds per game).

Henry joins 6’0” forward Anikia Jawara (Oakland, Calif./Georgia Perimeter College) and 6’1” forward Khalilah Daniels (San Jose, Calif./Mission Junior College) as junior college transfers with two years of eligibility in Crimson and White. Two other Spence signees, 6’1” guard Hannah Spanich (Tulsa, Okla.) and 5’6” point guard Jazmyn Foster (Phoenix, Ariz.) will be freshmen in Fall 2006 semester.

"Kayla is a physical athlete who knows how to score, run the floor and compete,” Spence said. “She has had very good coaching from her high school coach (Robbie Sandoval, Mount Miguel HS) and her junior college coach (Karen Caires). Kayla adds more offensive punch and athleticism to our roster; she is a lot like (rising junior forward) Sherell Neal (Phoenix, Ariz.) in that she doesn't really have a set position but is just a basketball player. I am looking forward to Kayla joining the Aggie Women’s Basketball Family and helping us take that next step to compete for the WAC championship again."

NMSU is coming off a campaign in which it went 10-20 overall, 5-11 in its first season in the WAC, and knocked off higher-seeded foes Fresno State and Boise State to reach the WAC Championship game against #16 Louisiana Tech. The appearance in the conference title game was the first in school history for the Aggies.
