COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team opens the 2014-15 season participating the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sept. 6-7.
This will be the third time the Aggies have competed in the tournament hosted by the Air Force Academy, with the team’s best finish during 2010-11 season when the team tied for third out of 17 teams. NM State, which is the defending Western Athletic Conference Champion and 2014 NCAA West Regional Tournament participant, finished sixth last year but had a chance to be in the running for a win until the last few holes of play.
“The team is really excited about the season starting,” said head coach Mike Dirks. “We had really good rounds of qualifying and you know the student-athletes worked hard over the summer because they are playing a lot better. We had a chance to win there last year so that is motivating for the players to get out and start the season on a high-note.”
The 2014 Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational features 16 teams on the par 72 Eisenhower Blue Course. The teams include: Air Force, Air Force JV, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Kansas City, Utah, Utah State, UNLV, UTEP, Weber State and Wyoming.
Playing for the Aggies in the season opening tournament are junior Kenneth Fadke II, senior Patrick Beyhan, sophomore Travis Benson, senior Brett Walker, while junior Joey Martinez will play as an individual. Walker averaged 73.56 strokes per round last year and Beyhan posted a 74.13 stroke per round average.
Recaps and results will be posted at the end of each day of play and can be found online at www.NMStateSports.com.
