LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team got a glimpse of what’s ahead in a couple of weeks at the WAC Championships after pulling off a victory over Western Athletic Conference member Idaho, 4-3, on Sunday at the NM State Tennis Center.

The Aggies conclude the spring schedule with a 9-11 overall record and on a four-match winning streak.  NM State has played its best tennis at home, which bodes well for the squad since it will host the 2014 WAC Championships in two weeks at the NM State Tennis Center, where the Aggies have won three-consecutive matches and finished the spring at 6-2.

Sunday was Senior Day for NM State as seniors Annemieke Witte and Ros-Polly Nguyen were recognized after the match for their four years of service to the Aggies.  Before their recognition, however, both seniors showed why they are an integral part of the NM State squad, as both picked up an important straight-set victory in singles play.   Witte defeated Sophie Vickers at the four spot, 7-5, 6-1, while Nguyen won at the No. 5 court, 6-2, 6-3, overBelen Barcenilla.

The day did not start off well for the Aggies as they fell in a hole early, losing all three doubles’ matches to go down 0-1 heading into singles play.  But NM State would win four out of the six singles’ matches to take the close victory over the Vandals.

“We got off to a slow start in the doubles but came on strong in the singles, winning four out of the six,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We are very proud of the seniors and how the team played and supported each other today, we expect to see Idaho again in the WAC finals in two weeks.”

Joining Witte and Nguyen with victories in singles play were freshman Brittany Collens and junior Susana Alcaraz.  Collens defeated Rita Bermudez, 6-3, 7-6, at the six spot.  Alcaraz, meanwhile, played at No. 2 against Almudena Sanz in what would be the deciding matchup.  Alcaraz lost the first set, 7-6, but came back to win the final two sets by identical 6-4 scores to give NM State its senior-day victory.

If there was a small downside for the Aggies on the day, it was that sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava lost her singles’ match at the No. 1 court, breaking her 11-match winning streak.  Shrivastava had not lost a singles’ match in over two months.

NM State will now prepare for the WAC Championships, which it will host from Wednesday, April 23, through Sunday, April 27.
