LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team wraps up its regular-season schedule with two matches at the NM State Tennis Center. The Aggies face Arkansas State on Friday, April 11, beginning at 2 p.m. (MDT). NM State then celebrates Senior Day on Sunday, April 13, with a matchup versus Western Athletic Conference member Idaho at 9 a.m.
The Aggies go into the final weekend of play before the WAC Tournament with a 7-11 overall record, including 4-2 at home. NM State is on a two-match winning streak after defeating Western New Mexico, 4-0, on Wednesday, April 2.
Sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava heads into this weekend with 10 wins and two unfinished matches and has not lost a singles match since mid February.
Arkansas State comes to Las Cruces at 6-7 overall including a 1-5 record on the road. The Red Wolves are coming off a 4-3 win over Marquette on Friday, April 4.
Idaho’s 14-3 record is the best record among WAC schools, and the Vandals have only lost two road matches all spring as they have a 6-2 record away from home. Idaho is on a two-match road winning streak, including shutout wins over Northern Arizona (7-0) and Grand Canyon (4-0). The Vandals will face UTEP on Friday, in El Paso, Texas, and Arkansas State on Saturday, in Las Cruces before facing the Aggies.
Seniors Annemieke Witte and Ros-Polly Nguyen will be recognized during Sunday’s match against Idaho.
Witte has been a force for the Aggies since 2010. She has an impressive 62-48 singles record and has glided on a five-match winning streak twice in her career. This season, Witte is 10-5 during spring play while playing mostly at the No. 5 spot. In doubles play, she finished her career with a 48-54 record. That includes a 10-6 record with partner Ashvarya Shrivastava this season. The duo claimed a 6-3 win over the 58-th ranked pair from UNLV this season. She helped the Aggies defeat I-10 rival UTEP three of her four seasons with the team and beat Rio Grande Rival New Mexico twice. Academically, Witte is a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and has made the Academic All-WAC list for three straight seasons. She also helped her 2012-13 team to the NM State Scholar Athlete Governor’s Academic Award for the best cumulative GPA of all Aggie sports teams.
Nguyen has spent four years with NM State making a name for herself on the tennis court. She has compiled a 55-43 singles record in Crimson and White with a career-best seven-match winning streak in 2012. She finished that sophomore season winning 12 of her 14 individual matches. She also won 12 matches for the Aggies as a junior and tabbed seven wins against ranked opponents in her career. Nguyen finished her career with a 47-55 doubles record, including a 6-4 win over the No. 58 pair from UNLV to start her senior season. Academically, Nguyen was named to the ITA Scholar Athlete list as a junior and has made the Academic All-WAC list for three straight seasons. She also helped her 2012-13 team to the NM State Scholar Athlete Governor’s Academic Award for the best cumulative GPA of all Aggie sports teams.
