Release:  03/12/2014

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team continues its spring schedule by competing at the 2014 Notre Dame Clover Cup from Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, at the par-72, 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

The three-round tournament will consist of one 18-hole round on each day with each round scheduled for a 9 a.m. (MDT) shotgun start.  Fans can follow the action live with live scoring at www.golfstat.com.

Freshmen Valeria Macias and Camille Orito, sophomores Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias and junior Paige Darwin will tee off as part of the NM State five-golfer team.

“This week at Longbow Golf Club will be crucial in that we will get a chance to compete on the same course that we will play for our conference championship,” Aggie assistant coach Danny Bowen said. “This will be an opportunity to devise a game plan, not only for this week, but for a month from now at the WAC Tournament as well. We’re looking forward to a golf course that lends itself to making a few more birdies than our last event did, so we are up to the challenge.”

The Aggies are part of a 16-team field that includes five teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation according to golfstat rankings, including Louisville (38th), host Notre Dame (44th), San Diego State (45th), UNLV (47th) and East Carolina (50th).

Rounding out the field in Arizona are: Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida International, Tulsa, Kennesaw State, Maryland, St. Johns, Nebraska and Houston.

The Clover Cup will be the seventh tournament of the season, and third of the spring, for NM State.  The Aggies are coming off a tie for 16th place finish at the Bruin-Wave Invitational (March 3-4).

NM State kicked off the spring schedule with a seventh-place finish at the Jim West Challenge in Texas (Feb. 17-18).  The Aggies had two top-5 finishes during the fall, including a season’s best tie for second at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 29-31).

Dalpes and Valeria Macias have competed in all six tournaments for NM State this season.  Dalpes has the low round of the season for the Aggies, a 2-under 70 during the first round of the Aggies’ home tournament, while Macias has the best finish, a third-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

Darwin and Viviana Macias have each participated in five tournaments this season.  Macias’ average of 76.67 is tops for the NM State squad among golfers who have played in at least three tournaments.  Darwin’s best round before this season was a 6-over 78.  This season she has shot rounds of 1-over, 3-over, 4-over and 5-over-par, all better than her previous low round.

Orito, meanwhile, will be making her fourth tournament appearance for the Aggies.  She made back-to-back tournament appearances in the fall and will be doing so again during the Clover Cup as she also participated in NM State’s last tournament, the Bruin-Wave Invitational.

“We've been having some great qualifiers lately as we head into the bulk of our season,” Bowen said. “The team is really pushing each other for traveling spots, which is great competition to get us ready for our events.”

This will be third year of the Notre Dame Clover Cup and the first time the Aggies take part in the tournament.  The previous two Clover Cups have been won in runaway fashion with Colorado winning the inaugural tournament in 2012 by 31 strokes and Oklahoma taking an 18-stroke win during last year’s tournament.
