SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Mexico State women’s swimming and diving team marked 99 points during the opening day of the 2014 WAC Championships on Wednesday to sit in third place out of eight teams heading into day two of the conference tournament.

The Aggies will start the second day seven points behind co-leaders Northern Arizona and Idaho, both of whom scored 106 points on Wednesday at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center.

There were three women’s events during the first day of the WAC Championships, two relays and the 1-meter diving event.

NM State divers Audrey Ruiz, Lauren Reifel and Jaymee Porter all marked lifetime-best scores during the diving event.  All three divers made the 16-diver finals’ field after the prelims and all three finished in the top 10.

Ruiz led the group with a fourth-place finish during the final of the 1-meter with a score of 295.90, marking 15 points for the NM State squad.  Reifel was right behind with a finals score of 262.00 and in sixth place.  Porter was the high scorer for the ‘B’ finals, finishing in ninth with a 267.55 score while marking nine points.  Idaho swept the top-two spots during the 1-meter.

“The divers were extremely impressive, both Audrey Ruiz and Jaymee Porter qualified for zones,” Aggie head coach Rick Pratt said. “This certainly was the best showing our divers have ever had, (diving) coach (Kyle) Bogner has done a great job preparing our divers for this meet.”

NM State started the day with a third-place finish during the 200 medley relay to score the first 32 points of the day for the Aggies.  NM State used a swimmer from each class, senior Terrin Seaver, junior Jessica Legge, sophomore Dorottya Lennert and freshman Erin Giles, who had the fastest split of the four, to finish the relay in a time of 1:41.49, a season’s best for the school.

The school record for the event?  A time of 1:41.48 during the WAC Championships in 2012, a team that also included Seaver and Legge.  In other words, this year’s time was 1/100th of a second off the school record.

Day one finished with the Aggies taking fourth place and marking another 30 points during the 800 free relay.  Seaver and sophomores Nicole Brennecke, Cassandra Rupp and Emily Nightingale finished the relay in a time of 7:27.26, also a season’s best.

“We had a solid start today and we had some good signs for things to come for the rest of the weekend,” Pratt said. “The 200 medley relay was the second fastest relay in school history and the 800 free was a great showing as well. It was overall a great first session.”

The WAC Championships continue Thursday and will run through Saturday.  Thursday’s events will include the 500 free, 200 individual medley (IM), 50 free, 3-meter diving and 200 free relay.

The WAC will continue to have the finals of each day available for view through its website.  The finals, which begin each day at 5 p.m. (MT), are available for a one-time or daily fee.  Follow the link provided to access the WAC live stream page.
