LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team won three singles matches and a doubles match versus Pacific on Sunday but lost a close matchup, 4-3, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
In what would eventually decide the match, the Aggies lost the doubles’ point after losing two of three doubles matches. NM State’s only doubles victory came at three spot from senior Annemieke Witte and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava who won 6-2 over Christiana Ferrari and Gergana Boncheva.
“It was tough 4-3 loss today,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We had chances at the No. 2 doubles to clinch the point after winning the No. 3 doubles.”
NM State had singles victories at the three, four and five spots, all in straight sets. Junior Susana Alcaraz defeated Ferrari 7-6, 6-3, fellow junior Denise Van Der Ben won 6-2, 7-6 and Witte defeated Boncheva 6-3, 6-3.
The Aggies split the six singles points with the Tigers as senior Ros-Polly Nguyen lost at the No. 1 spot, Shrivastava lost at two and freshman Brittany Collens lost at the six spot.
“We started really slowly in the singles but fought really hard the entire match,” Fernandez said. “It was a great learning experience for us against a very solid team today. Alcaraz, Van Der Ben and Witte all won their singles and Shrivastava was extremely close and battled all the way to the end.”
NM State will now return home to begin its spring schedule at the NM State Tennis Center. The Aggies will have four matches at home over the next two weeks beginning with a matchup versus Lamar on Friday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. (MT).
“I really like what I am seeing from this team,” Fernandez said. “I expect many more wins if we keep fighting this hard every match.”
