LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team continued play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional at the Darling Tennis Center on Friday, placing a doubles team into one of Saturday’s quarterfinal matches.

For the third-consecutive day, the sophomore duo of Thomas Douglas and Naveen Manivannan easily handled their opponents.  Friday saw the Aggie tandem defeat Utah’s Slim Hamza and Devin Lane, 8-3, in the round of 16.  Douglas and Manivannan had won their first two matches by an 8-2 score.

The duo will now face Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos of Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho in the quarterfinal round.  The matchup is set to start at 11 a.m. (MT) on Saturday.

If Douglas and Manivannan win their quarterfinal match they will then play in the semifinal round which is also slated for Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. (MT).

The NM State doubles team did not have as much luck in the singles draw, however, as both lost their respective consolation matches.  Douglas lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to Utah State’s Sean Levesque while Manivannan fell in three sets to Semion Branzburg of Montana, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Meanwhile, on the consolation side of doubles play, the Aggie team of sophomore Liam Goldberg and senior Marc Westgate won two matches on Friday and will have their own quarterfinal match to contend with on Saturday.

The doubles partners disposed of New Mexico’s Tanner Berkabile and Mitch McDaniels, 8-3, in the morning and then got by Jeremy Bourgeois and Juan Canales of BYU in thrilling fashion, 8-7.

Like Douglas and Manivannan, Goldberg and Westgate will play at 11 a.m. (MT) and then proceed to the semifinals at 3 p.m. (MT) with a win.

Goldberg and Westgate will face Ben Gendron and Austin Mayo of Northern Arizona in the consolation quarterfinals.  The Northern Arizona duo got to the quarterfinal round in part by defeating NM State’s Germain Degardin and Strahinja Trecakov, 8-4, in round two of consolation play.

Play at the ITA Mountain Regional continues Saturday with quarterfinal and semifinal matches and concludes on Sunday with championship matches.
