LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Day two is in the books for the New Mexico State University men’s tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional being played at the Darling Tennis Center.
Thursday’s play for the Aggies was highlighted by the second-consecutive 8-2 win for the doubles team of sophomores Thomas Douglas and Naveen Manivannan. The NM State tandem defeated Alex Clinkenbeard and Aidan Talcott of Denver to remain undefeated on the season and advance to the round of 16 in the desert.
Unfortunately, the team of junior Germain Degardin and sophomore Strahinja Trecakov could not match their teammates’ effort and fell to rival New Mexico’s Rodolfo Juaregui and Hayden Sabatka, 8-3, to fall into the consolation side of the bracket.
In singles play, for the first time this season, and in his young Aggie career, sophomore Liam Goldberg lost a match and will not contend for a bracket title. Goldberg fell to Boise State’s Brendan McClain, 6-4, 6-1.
Degardin, the only other NM State competitor left in the main draw of the singles bracket, also lost during the round of 32. Degardin lost to Artemiy Nikitin of Idaho, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, on the consolation side, Manivannan won his singles match over Jacob Sullivan of BYU, 6-2, 6-2, to make it two wins for him on the day. Not to be outdone, his doubles partner, Douglas, also won his consolation match over Utah’s Justin Archer, 6-4, 7-6.
On the other side, Trecakov and senior Marc Westgate both lost their individual singles matches on the consolation side.
The ITA Mountain Regional continues Friday with round of 16 and quarterfinal matches on the singles side, the round of 16 on the doubles side and consolation matches on both sides.
The Aggie duo of Douglas and Manivannan are set to play their match at 10 a.m. (MT) to try and advance to the quarterfinals of doubles play.
