LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The New Mexico State University men’s tennis team kicked off its participation at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional on Wednesday by completing the first two rounds of singles play and the first round of doubles play at the Darling Tennis Center.

The Aggies entered the tournament with six singles players and three doubles teams competing.  After the first round, only one singles player and one doubles team has lost.

In singles play, sophomore Liam Goldberg continued his undefeated season with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Northern Arizona’s Alan Barrios during the morning’s first round.  Goldberg has already won two individual titles during NM State’s first two tournaments this season.

Aggie junior Germain Degardin also collected a first-round victory over a Northern Arizona foe, rallying to defeat Alex Locci in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Both Goldberg and Degardin also claimed victories during round two to advance to the round of 32 on Thursday.  Golberg defeated fellow Australian Cameron Lee of Utah, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, while Degardin needed only two sets to dispose of Montana’s Ethan Vaughn, 6-2, 6-0.

Other winners during round one for NM State were senior Marc Westgate who defeated Tomas Cosmai of Utah State (7-6, 6-3), sophomore Naveen Manivannan who won over Dillon Launius of Air Force (6-0, 6-1) and sophomore Strahinja Trecakov who also won in straight sets over UNLV’s Jeff Vongman (6-1, 6-2).

Unfortunately for the Aggies, Westgate, Manivannan and Trecakov all lost their respective second-round matches in the afternoon.  The trio will now join sophomore Thomas Douglas on the consolation side of the bracket.  Douglas lost his opening-round match to Montana’s Semion Branzburg, 6-2, 6-4.

Douglas, however, had better luck in doubles play as he and his partner, Manivannan, easily defeated the Montana duo of Mikolaj Caruk and Peter Mimnagh-Fleming, 8-2, to advance to round two on Thursday.  The team of Douglas/Manivannan, like Goldberg in singles, is undefeated this season and has two titles under its belt.

Also in doubles play for NM State, the team of Degardin/Trecakov also advanced to the second round by defeating Weber State’s Landon Barlow and Ryan Garner, 8-4.  The Aggies almost made it three-for-three in doubles play, but the duo of Goldberg/Westgate narrowly lost, 8-7, to Sterling Galli and Jacob Sullivan of BYU.

The ITA Mountain Regional continues Thursday with the round of 32 for singles and doubles play as well as the start of consolation play.  The tournament will conclude on Sunday with championship matches and final consolation matches.
