BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – For the second straight game, the New Mexico State soccer team fell in a double-overtime match. The Aggies dropped a 2-1 game to CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 11.
The ‘Runners scored first with a pair of touch passes for a goal in the 33rd minute of play to lead the Aggies going into halftime.
NM State came back to score early in the second half. Junior Jennae Cambra scored her second goal this season with a shot from about 15 yards out after a pass from senior Daisy Hernandez.
“I felt like this was our best attacking game of the year,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “We had a few chances to win the game. We had a couple of controversial moments, hit the cross bar and just couldn’t find that striking goal. We got a little stretched out at the end and that will happen when you play that many minutes.”
As the clock winded down, NM State and Bakersfield headed into overtime. It took until the second overtime for the game to be decided. Bakersfield’s Hedda Regefalk scored off a long pass to score the game winner for the ‘Runners with just 1:56 remaining in the second overtime period.
“I am really proud of the team. They played really hard and attacked really well and this was our best attacking game this far,” Quinn said.
NM State outshot Bakersfield in overtime 6-3, including three more shots in the second overtime.
NM State continues on the road against Utah Valley, Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
