Release:  10/08/2013

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State University women’s golf team wrapped up the middle round of its home tournament, the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate, on Tuesday by posting a 14-over-par 302 round at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.  The Aggies will start the final round on Wednesday in ninth place with a total-team score of 24-over 600 (298-302).

NM State was paced by sophomore Viviana Macias who sits in the top 20 heading into the final round.  Macias, playing in her first home tournament for the Aggies, climbed up to a tie for 19th place after shooting a 1-over-par 73 during round two.

Macias, who has a two-round total of 4-over 148 (75-73), birdied three holes on the day, including birdies on her first and final holes of the round.  Unfortunately for the Aggie team, Macias is playing as an individual and her score will not count towards the team score.

Right behind Macias is sophomore Kacey Dalpes who finished the first two rounds with a total score of 5-over-par 149 (70-79) and in a tie for 26th place.  Dalpes started the day just a couple of shots behind the leader but could not match her under-par score from the first round during Tuesday’s round.

Freshman Valeria Macias and junior Laura Barron each holed a couple of birdies during the second round.  Macias shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday and will start the final round in a tie for 29th with a total score of 6-over 150 (73-77).  Barron, meanwhile, is one shot behind Macias after shooting a 3-over 75.  She will start the final 18 holes with a 7-over-par 151 and in a tie for 37th place.

Perhaps the most impressive showing for NM State during round two came from two of its newcomers.  Freshmen Kristen Cline and Camille Orito each shot a 3-over 75 round on Tuesday, a couple of shots off of the best round of the day for the Aggies.  Cline, a Socorro, N.M., native, now sits in a tie for 47th at 10-over-par 154 (79-75), while Orito will start Wednesday’s final round at 13-over-par 157 (82-75) and in a tie for 63rd place.

The two freshmen not only improved on their individual score from round one and moved up the leaderboard, they also led NM State in birdies converted during the second round.  Cline sank three birdies on the day to match Viviana Macias’ three.  Not to be outdone, Orito put four birdies on her scorecard to lead the Aggies on the day and tie for the team lead with five total birds.

Rounding out the Aggie golfers were individual players Paige Darwin, who is in a tie for 44th with a total score of 9-over 153 (75-78), and Amelie Buhl, who is a tie for 65th place with a two-round score of 14-over-par 158 (79-79).

Overall, UC Irvine and Portland State remain 1-2.  For the second-consecutive day Irvine finished one shot better than Portland State and now holds a two-shot lead at 1-over-par 577 (290-287).  Portland State sits at 3-over 579 (291-288) while Nevada rounds out the top 3 at 8-over-par 584 (293-291).

Portland State’s A Ram Choi continues to hold a slim lead on second place.  Choi will begin the final round at 3-under-par 141 (68-73), just one shot ahead of the trio of Irvine’s Sara Banke, North Texas’ McKenzie Ralston and Idaho’s Kaitlyn Oster, who all finished with a total score of 2-under-par.

Oster had the highlight of the day and the tournament as she sank a hole-in-one on the 160-yard, par-3 11th hole.

The Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate concludes Wednesday with the final 18 holes of the tournament.  Play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.  Remember to keep track of all players on the course with live scoring at www.golfstat.com or log on to NMStateSports.com at the end of the tournament for a complete recap of all individual and team final standings.
