Colorado Springs, Colo. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team opened up its season with a two-round score of even-par, 576 (284-292). The Aggies are currently in third place overall after a first round score of 4-under par, 284 and a second round score of 4-over par, 292 at the 7,408-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Golf Course.
“We started off playing great the first round and we made a lot of pars and kept the ball in play,” head coach Mike Dirks. “In the second round we struggled but made some birdies at the end of the round and it gave us a chance to compete for the tournament which is where we want to be.”
The Aggies were led by sophomore Kenneth Fadke II, who carded two-round score of 1-under par, 143 (71-72). He is currently tied for eighth overall after recording five birdies in his two rounds. Junior Brett Walker and freshman Travis Benson finished 1-over par, 145 in the first two rounds. Walker was 1-under par, 71 after round one then carded a 2-over par, 74 in round two. He had eight birdies on the day and is currently tied for 18th overall.
Benson carded rounds of 2-under par, 70 and 3-over par, 75 in the first two rounds, with nine birdies on the day, placing him in a tie for 18th.
Senior Willy Hogan started the day with a an even-par, 72 but fired a 5-over par, 77 in round two and is currently tied for 42nd overall at 5-over par, 149. Hogan had four birdies on the day. Junior Patrick Beyhan was 7-under par, 151, placing him in a tie for 56th. Beyhan was 8-over par, 80 in round one but bounced back in round two with a 1-under par, 71. He carded four birdies on the day.
Air Force leads the tournament at 13-under par, followed by UTEP (-1), NM State (E), Colorado (+6) and Wyoming (+7). Kyle Westmoreland of Air Force leads the tournament at 9-under par.
