LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 5) – New Mexico State head women’s basketball coach Mark Trakh is set to participate in the ‘Walk to End Alzheimer’s’ on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Las Cruces. Trakh, along with the rest of the women’s basketball team are set to participate with former Aggie Chrissy Fletcher to raise funding and awareness for research for the disease.

Fletcher played for the Aggies from 2009-13 and was affected by the illness when her grandfather, Cliff Wilke, passed away in January from the disease. Trakh said he understands Fletcher’s desire to raise awareness and funding, since his mother is currently battling the disease.

“Chrissy’s grandfather passed away from it and my mother currently suffers with it, so we are both affected by this on a personal level,” Trakh said. “Chrissy really spearheaded this fundraiser. There is a great need for Alzheimer’s awareness and funding and this is our way of helping. I have seen it first-hand and people need to be aware that it affects more than just the person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.”

Fletcher set a goal of raising $500 individually for the event, but has exceeded that goal with a current total of $1,160.

“It is absolutely amazing to raise that much money for my personal goal,” Fletcher said. “The great thing is that even after the walk, people can still donate to the association.”

Fletcher said that she spent a great deal of time with her late grandfather before his passing and realized how much her entire family was affected by the disease and began to research the illness more.

“It is one of the least funded diseases in the world, but is one of the leading causes of death. Coach Trakh understands what I was going through, so he and the team decided to help me with the walk this weekend,” Fletcher said.

The walk, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7, is set for 8 a.m. at Young Park in Las Cruces. For more information on the walk, click HERE
